My Sister Called Me Today.
My sister called me today.
After a minute of pleasantries she paused and said, “I’m just calling to check on you.”
You know how sometimes right after a thunderstorm, when you least expect it, you will look up into the sky and see a rainbow.
That’s the way I felt when my sister called me today.
Sometimes it’s easy to focus on the storm. You see the storm clouds gathering. They are dark almost ominious. You feel overwhelmed by the blowing wind and the torrential rain.
You feel begin to feel sorry for yourself.
You say to yourself, “I’m stuck in this storm and no one cares”.
You feel isolated. Alone. Outside in the rain while others seem to share in the warmth of a home.
You tell yourself you deserve to stand in the rain. You re-live all the moments of your life when you could have been a better person. A better brother. A better friend.
You stand alone in the rain and feel the cold soak down into your bones.
You are alone.
But sometimes …. Not often, … but sometimes after the rain there will be a rainbow. A rainbow, a rainbow that feels like SOMEONE is saying, “Hello, I am just calling to check on you.”
My sister told me she could see the last time we visited that something was not right.
For the first time in maybe ever she told me about her troubles. She opened up and told me her worries.
Things that concerned her and her family.
She shared with me the things that mattered most in her life. Things she would normally share with others perhaps, but this time …. this time she shared herself with me.
She was vulnerable.
And then she said, “I hope you are OK”.
“I want you to know that I love you”.
And just like that, the storm clouds rolled away and a rainbow began to shine.
Brilliant colors of Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.
My sister called me today.
I love you too little sister. Very very much.
Thank You for my rainbow.
PS: Go get that eye surgery asap.
